The CAPM® certificate is the Project Management Institute (PMI)’s entry level certification for project managers or people who are interested in entering the field of project management. It is based on PMI’s project management framework as explained in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), in its fifth edition as of January, 2013.

The CAPM® is a relatively new credential, introduced in 2003 (the PMP®, on the other hand, was introduced in the United States in 1984). The CAPM exam features 150 multiple choice questions that must be completed in a three hour time period at a registered testing center (Prometric Center in Maneeya Building).

The CAPM is recognized by business professionals around the world as confirmation that your skills have met an exacting professional standard and you are familiar with the processes and terminology for effective project management.

Audience

Intended for individuals that participate in project teams or who provide expertise or serve as project sponsors, facilitators, liaisons or coordinators.

Requirements

Requirements

  • High school diploma, an associate’s degree, or the global equivalent
  • 23 hours of project management education (without work experience) OR 1500 hours of professional experience on a project team (without project management education)

Note: One hour of classroom instruction equals one contact hour. If you have completed a university or college course on project management that met for three hours per week for 15 weeks, you would document 45 contact hours on the application. If only a portion of a course dealt with project management, only the hours spent on project management can be applied toward the total.

The following education does not satisfy the education requirements:

  • PMI chapter meetings*
  • Self-directed learning (e.g., reading books, watching instructional videos or sessions with coaches or mentors)

*If at least one hour of a chapter meeting is spent conducting a learning activity, the hour(s) spent in that activity can be counted towards the educational eligibility requirement.

How to Prepare

To prepare for the CAPM® exam you should take an exam preparation course.

Because of the difficulty of the CAPM® exam many candidates choose to attend an exam preparation “boot-camp” style class. Typical boot camps are 3 – 5 days in length. At Project Victor, we believe it takes a minimum of 35 hours of class time to convey all of the information and ensure the candidate will be able to pass on the first attempt.

Another option is to self-study. There are a number of products available on the market, but the ultimate source is The PMBOK® Guide, 5th Edition.
