Who Should Pursue the PMP® Certification?

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the PMP® certification, candidates must meet specific educational and professional experience criteria:

  • Four-Year Degree:
    • Experience: 36 months leading projects within the past 8 years.
    • Education: 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification.
  • High School Diploma or Associate’s Degree (or global equivalent):
    • Experience: 60 months leading projects within the past 8 years.
    • Education: 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification.

Application Process

  1. Verify Eligibility: Ensure you meet the educational and professional experience requirements.
  2. Create a PMI Account: Register at PMI.org.
  3. Complete the Application: Fill out and submit the PMP® application online.
  4. Application Review: PMI reviews applications within 5-10 business days.
  5. Payment:
    • PMI Members: $405
    • Non-Members: $555
  6. Audit Process (if selected):
    • Approximately 5% of applications are randomly selected for audit.
    • If selected, submit the required documentation.
  7. Schedule the Exam: Upon approval, schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE test center.

PMP® Exam Content Outline (Updated 2021)

The PMP® exam was updated in January 2021 to reflect current practices and now focuses on three domains:

Key changes include:

  • Diverse question formats: multiple-choice, multiple-response, matching, hotspot, and limited fill-in-the-blank.
  • Total questions: 180 (175 scored and 5 unscored).
  • Exam duration: 230 minutes.
  • Two 10-minute breaks during the exam.

Preparation methods include:

  • Self-Study: Utilizing the latest edition of the PMBOK® Guide and other study materials.
  • Exam Preparation Courses: Many candidates opt for “boot camp” style courses for comprehensive coverage.

  • PMBOK® Guide (7th Edition): The official guide to project management practices.
  • Agile Practice Guide: For agile and hybrid methodologies.
  • Practice Exams: To simulate real exam conditions and assess readiness.
